LETTING GO OF THE BASEKT AND TRUSTING THE CREATOR OF THE RIVER

My oldest daughter is graduating high school this year. I still don’t know how this year snuck up on me. Wasn’t it just a minute ago she was asking me to fix a broken toy or teach her how to paint? I could cry just thinking about how quickly these small moments pass.

When I find myself feeling this way, I think about Moses’ mother.

In Exodus 2, we read the story of Moses being placed in a basket and hidden among the reeds. We often focus on how he was pulled from the water and later used by God to lead Israel to freedom, but I can’t help thinking about the faith it took for his mother to let him go.

She was living under a terrifying decree. Pharaoh had ordered that baby Hebrew boys be put to death. After hiding Moses for as long as she could, she placed him in a basket, set it among the reeds, and walked away. This was not a careless act. It was an act of trust born out of obedience and desperation. She did what she could, and then she entrusted what she loved most into the hands of God.

She did not know how the story would end. She only knew the God she was placing her child with.

As she hid her son in the darkness of the reeds tucked in a basket, God was already at work. The same God who created the river guided that basket to Pharaoh’s daughter. What looked like giving up was actually intentional placement. What felt like loss became protection and salvation.

Sometimes we have a basket, too.

It might be a child stepping into a new season. It might be a situation we have tried to fix in our own strength for far too long. It might be something we have hidden away, afraid of what will happen if we let go. Like Moses’ mother, we may not be able to control the outcome, but we can choose where we place our trust.

Letting go does not mean giving up. It means entrusting what we cannot control to the God who already holds it.

Philippians 4:6–7 reminds us, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Arise and Shine: what are you holding onto that you could let go and fully surrender to God?
