Sons and Daughters: A Greenhouse for Kansas
The following is taken from Supt Nathan L Sheridan’s sermon on Thursday at AGK Summit 2025
Why Mentorship, Multiplication, and Legacy Matter Now More Than Ever
“Leadership is influence,” John Maxwell reminds us—and influence, like faith, is meant to be multiplied. Paul told Timothy:
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)
This wasn’t just instruction—it was a call to build a legacy.
In the AGK, we believe that this generation—and the next—are not just to be taught, but to be entrusted.
-
In the business world, companies like Kodak and Blockbuster missed their moment, not because they lacked innovation, but because they failed to invest in the future.
If we aren’t intentional, the Church can fall into the same trap. We’re called to multiply, not just maintain.
-
Scripture is full of legacy-building relationships:
Moses prepared Joshua.
Naomi guided Ruth.
Paul discipled Timothy.
Elijah passed the mantle to Elisha.
These leaders didn’t just perform their duties—they prepared successors. And many did so in obscurity, not on platforms. God shapes leaders in hidden places before using them in public ones.
-
David ruled after years in caves.
Joseph led Egypt after being forgotten in prison.
Jesus ministered for 3 years after 30 years of preparation.
Waiting isn’t punishment—it’s preparation. And mentorship isn’t optional—it’s essential.
-
Would you board a plane with an untrained pilot? Yet we sometimes do the equivalent in ministry—handing leaders a title and a pulpit, but no mentor.
People say, “Experience is a great teacher.” I would argue that someone else’s experience is even better.
This generation doesn’t just need opportunity—it needs discipleship.
In many ministry contexts, we’ve settled for a transactional model of mentorship, focused on getting things done. But Jesus modeled transformational discipleship, focused on developing people.
Here’s what transformational mentoring looks like:
-
Transactional: “Watch me so you can copy the task.”
Transformational: “Watch how I live, lead, and serve—so you can grow in your faith and calling.”
From task imitation to heart transformation.
-
Transactional: “Help me with this so we can get more done.”
Transformational: “Join me in ministry so you can experience it hands-on and gain confidence in your calling.”
From getting help to giving access—moving from function to formation.
-
Transactional: “You do this, so I don’t have to.”
Transformational: “I trust you to lead—and I’m here to support, coach, and walk with you.”
From delegation to empowerment—ownership in ministry and leadership.
-
Transactional: “You’re on your own now. Hope it works out!”
Transformational: “You’re ready to lead and disciple others. I’m still here as a mentor.”
The focus becomes multiplication—disciples making disciples.
Why this matters:
Transactional ministry produces workers who serve for a season.
Transformational ministry produces disciples who serve for a lifetime.
Next Steps
You don’t need a staff of ten or a budget in the six figures. You need intentionality and the faith to see what God sees.
-
Identify the Faithful Few
Look for consistency, servant-heartedness, and spiritual hunger. Find 3–5 people for weekly discipleship. Emphasize character before charisma.Use the Sidecar Model
Bring others along: hospital visits, meetings, ministry moments.Share the Pulpit Intentionally
Let them pray, teach, and lead in safe, supportive spaces.Create Peer Encouragement
Consider an area (or digital) pastors’ huddle—monthly support, shared wisdom.Engage the Next Generation
Students, interns, and retirees. Generational synergy is Kingdom strategy.Celebrate Small Wins
Quiet growth is still Kingdom fruit.Allow AGK leaders to meet with those who feel CALLED to ministry.
When we preach in your pulpit, if someone is CALLED to ministry, could you arrange for us, as leaders in the AGK Ministry Network, to spend 10-20 minutes hearing their story and encouraging their next steps?
You don’t need a big church. You need intentionality.
You may feel overlooked. You may wonder if what you’re doing is making a difference. But remember: Jesus was raised in Nazareth—a small town with no spotlight. Yet from Nazareth came the Savior of the world.
Small places birth big purpose when God is in it.
Don’t underestimate who God is developing as a disciple in your office, your living room, or your fellowship hall. You may not see the full harvest, but you are planting seeds of eternal significance.
My own journey in AGK is rooted in a 10-minute conversation that changed everything.
I was 28 years old when I met then-Superintendent Terry Yancey, and in just a few minutes, I sensed his deep desire to mentor. That conversation became a defining moment—I didn’t just want to serve, I wanted to grow under someone who would invest in me.
Over the last 15 years, we’ve met many times in Greensburg—halfway between our ministries—for coffee or lunch. Those moments became sacred spaces of encouragement, wisdom, and perspective.
I can name three key mentors who invested in my life early on—each of them someone I sought out:
Benny Ferguson – for insight into missions
Ron Morein – for wisdom in staff leadership
Terry Yancey – for a deeper understanding of pastoring in Kansas
In addition to those voices, I’ve been shaped by scores of family members and books—faithful influences that poured steady truth into me across seasons.
Mentorship isn’t just about who finds you. It’s often about who you’re willing to pursue.
To every young leader: Don’t wait to be noticed—ask to be mentored.
To every seasoned pastor: Be interruptible. One conversation could launch someone’s calling.
A Living Example: Joe Voss and Bobby Massey
-
Bobby Massey served under Joe Voss as an associate pastor. From day one, Joe said:
“I want to raise you up to lead—and I want you to go further than I ever have.”
Joe brought Bobby into every part of ministry—hospital visits, funerals, weddings, board meetings, and personal mentoring. After four years, Bobby’s title changed to reflect a pastoral team. By year eight, they became co-pastors, sharing preaching duties equally.
But what marked Bobby most came in a board meeting, when Joe asked the church to pay Bobby more than him, stating,
“He is the future. His family is younger. I want the church to know I believe in him.”
Two years later, Joe resigned, and the church unanimously voted Bobby in as lead pastor. It was a seamless, Spirit-led transition because a humble leader was willing to mentor, serve, and multiply.
The Secret to Tabasco Sauce
-
The peppers are aged in white oak barrels for three to five years before being bottled. Why so long? Because flavor takes time. Fermentation deepens the fire.
Just like Tabasco, the fire in your leadership is not produced in a moment—it’s cultivated in the quiet seasons of preparation.
And every bottle today contains seeds from the original peppers grown in the 1800s.
Legacy isn’t just created—it’s continued. The seeds you’re planting today are part of a much bigger story.
In rural Kansas, farmers know that after planting, nothing appears to happen for a long time. But underground, roots are forming.
If judged by the surface, they might give up. But seasoned farmers know: growing things grow slowly—then suddenly.
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
— Galatians 6:9
My heart and vision for the AGK Network
We're not just holding ground—we're planting forward.
I believe God is calling us, the AGK, to:
Plant 15 new churches in 5 years
Send 12 new missionaries in 6 years
Establish Wheat State Camp as a launchpad for future pastors, leaders, and global workers.
This is part of our greenhouse. And we are building it for generations we may never meet, but who will carry the Gospel further than we ever could.
AGK Family, hear my heart!
If you’ve been in ministry 20+ years: We honor you. Your wisdom is needed now more than ever.
If you’re beginning: You are seen. This is your greenhouse. God is growing you in hidden places for a public purpose.
Let’s entrust sons and daughters with the fire of faith.
Let’s plant what the next generation will harvest.
Let’s leave a legacy of Spirit-filled leaders across Kansas.

Forward Together- The Summit 2025 Sets the Tone
The Summit 2025 was more than a council—it was a Spirit-filled, mold-breaking moment for the Assemblies of God Kansas Ministry Network. From historic firsts to heartfelt ministry, this year's gathering marked a significant step into a Spirit-led future.
-
The Summit was the first Network Council led by our 10th Network Superintendent, Nathan Sheridan. Under his leadership, the event will be remembered for its multi-generational emphasis.
For the first time, students (6th- 12th grade) enjoyed their own Student Council which consisted of joint sessions with the adults, student-only sessions led by the Called team from the AG National Office, and a fun excursion to Chicken and Pickle.
One of the most memorable moments came Thursday night at Wheat State Retreat Center, where all generations gathered to celebrate 75 years of Wheat State ministry.
A powerful vision was cast as plans were unveiled to transform the outdoor basketball courts into an indoor court and multipurpose space. Nearly $100,000 was pledged toward this exciting development.
The night ended with a professional fireworks display, lighting up Lake Horizon in celebration of God's faithfulness and future plans.
-
Changing the timing to Thursday and Friday opened the door for more credential holders to attend. Simplifying the schedule created a more relaxed and refreshing experience from beginning to end. Incorporating a time of prayer at the ordination service for attendees feeling the call of God added value to the night and provided newly ordained ministers with an immediate ministry opportunity.
-
The tone set by Superintendent Sheridan and his leadership team, along with the relaxed schedule and celebration night at WSRC, all contributed to what many attendees referred to as “the feeling of family.” Old friendships were strengthened, new friendships were forged, and a sense of “togetherness” permeated The Summit from beginning to end.
-
The presence and ministry of the Holy Spirit brought new life and energy to the AGK's credentialed ministers and their families. Superintendent Sheridan set the tone early by delivering a powerful message that will become known as the “Tabasco Sermon” on Thursday morning. After his message, the altar flooded with ministers who were reminded of their value and calling when a white cord was placed on their shoulders.
Anointed messages from General Superintendent Doug Clay, Pastor Jarred Smith, and AG World Missionary Jacob Jester complemented the heart and vision of our Superintendent and resulted in more encounters with the Holy Spirit at the altars. Attendees to the Summit were not only encouraged and strengthened, but they also experienced an impartation of Holy Spirit-anointed vision for gospel ministry and investment in the next generation.
-
The Summit projected a strong and resounding message: God is moving in our midst, and the future is bright for the ministers, churches, and mission of the AGK!

Light for the Lost recap
We are celebrating an incredible truth: "Every SECOND, of every MINUTE, of every DAY, someone somewhere is using a Light for the Lost (LFTL) resource."
As we traveled across Kansas, stopping in seven locations, we gathered together, enjoying a delicious meal in fellowship and unity. Hearts were stirred as passionate speakers shared how LFTL resources are transforming lives across the globe. The mission message was powerful, reminding us that we all have a part to play in bringing the light of Christ to those in darkness.
-
Even though the 2025 LFTL Celebration Tour has concluded, the mission continues. You can still be a part of reaching the lost for Jesus—right from your home! LFTL equips Kansas missionaries and partners with vital evangelistic resources through five platforms:
Print
Audio
Video
Internet Technologies
Apps
Every one of these resources serves as a beacon of hope, guiding hearts to Jesus. And every Faith Promise made is now actively working through our missionaries and partners to bring the message of salvation to those who need it most.
The Challenge: The Work Isn’t Done
While we celebrate what God has done, we recognize that there is still much to be accomplished. Many lives are still waiting to hear the Good News of Jesus. The call to reach the lost is urgent, and the opportunity to make an eternal impact is now!
Will You Be a Part of What God is Doing?
Your prayers, your support, and your willingness to stand with our missionaries make an eternal difference. Together, we can ensure that Light for the Lost continues to shine in the darkest places.
The celebration doesn’t have to end—the mission is now.
Let’s keep the light shining!
God is on the Move Through AGK 50+ Adult Ministries!
What an incredible time we had on the AGK Regional 50+ Adult Ministries Tour! Over 150 of us came together for a powerful day filled with worship, fellowship, and a renewed passion to minister.
-
This ministry isn’t just about reaching a milestone—it’s about embracing the wisdom, experiences, and legacy we carry. Whether you're 50, 60, 70, 80, or beyond, God still has work for you to do! Your calling doesn’t retire, and your influence never fades.
-
From the moment we gathered, the energy was electric! The worship team led us into a powerful time of praise, setting the tone for an uplifting day. We enjoyed a delicious meal together, strengthening old friendships and forming new ones.
-
Superintendent Nathan Sheridan and Steve Bowman cast a compelling vision—mobilizing adults 50+ to mentor, minister, and leave a lasting legacy for the next generation.
Missionaries Chris and Sarah Geeseka from Church Mobilization shared exciting opportunities to serve and bless churches. We also had the privilege of filling Huggage Backpacks for Missionary Jason Geesaman and Hope Fostered, bringing love and encouragement to children in foster care.
-
One of the most impactful moments was Superintendent Nathan Sheridan’s challenge to intentionally invest in the next generation. He reminded us that our spiritual legacy is one of the most powerful gifts we can pass on.
God is moving! And this is just the beginning. Stay connected and inspired by following AGK 50+ Adult Ministries on Facebook.

Women’s tour recap
This spring was the third annual LOCALLY WOVEN Tour! The tour consisted of five stops across Kansas. Each stop was a comfortable and causal evening of connection designed to encourage and equip the women of Kansas in their faith and friendships. Once again this year, there was plenty of laughter in the quick-fire “get to know each other” opening questions as well as great discussion and shared ideas during the “talk it over” time towards the end.
-
… and how those played out through the WOVEN events that happened in 2024. Additionally, I shared a word of encouragement on the importance and power of “The One”- of how sharing our faith with even one person can make a big kingdom impact. Further, when we link arms with others we become a part of “The Some” that makes even more kingdom impact. I challenged each woman in attendance to start right where they are. In the spaces and places they are already in, they were encouraged to look for the “one” and link arms with “some”.
Each tour stop also provided opportunities for women to hear about and give to THREADS. THREADS is the financial arm of WOVEN Women's Ministries which contributes to World missions, U.S. missions, Kansas-specific ministry efforts, and administrative needs. These four strands are WOVEN together to create a beautiful tapestry of women co-laboring for the Kingdom. During the tour I reminded ladies of ministries THREADS had funded in 2024. Additionally, I shared about the ministry we are partnering with 2025, Inspire Global Sisterhood. WOVEN is thankful for the continued generosity of Kansas women that allows us to link arms with other women right here in our state and all across the world.
WOVEN is grateful for each church that hosted a stop of the LOCALLY WOVEN Tour, providing space for us to connect with women across the state. We look forward to the next opportunity for Kansas women to be together, our annual WOVEN Conference on October 3rd & 4th at Evangel in Wichita. Mark your calendar now for AUDACIOUS FAITH! Details are to be released this summer.
